Know before you book
Can I keep using it? Safe to keep using if it still charges normally. Do not charge it at all if liquid was involved.
What a successful repair restores A successful charging repair restores reliable charging; cable fit and charging response are tested before return.
Why does this happen? Often it isn’t broken at all — pocket lint and dust compact at the bottom of the port until the cable can’t seat properly.Often plain mechanical wear: thousands of insertions loosen the connector’s grip over a device’s life.Sometimes the device is fine and the cable or adapter is the culprit — always worth testing another set first.
What happens if you wait? A worn or debris-blocked port usually becomes less reliable with every connection — intermittent charging tends to become no charging. We inspect and clean first where appropriate, which often resolves it while the port is still serviceable.
Could a cheaper fix be enough? We inspect and clean the port first where appropriate, and only quote a replacement if cleaning doesn’t resolve it or the port is damaged — the cleaning cost is credited toward the replacement if one is then needed.
From our technicians A loose cable is not always a port fault — corrosion from a small liquid exposure months ago can look identical. Mention any liquid history when you book: it changes what we inspect first.

ExpressTech diagnoses and repairs iPhone charging faults for customers throughout Ireland — in person at the Dublin 2 workshop, or by nationwide Collection & Return without leaving home. Charging port work covers every iPhone from the 17 lineup back through 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, the SE range and the X series.
Most iPhone charging faults are not a broken port. Around nine in ten charging problems ExpressTech sees in store are resolved by professionally cleaning compacted debris out of the port, at €30 — not by replacing it. Where the port itself has genuinely failed, the standard quoted replacement is €89, and the €30 cleaning is credited in full toward it.
You can walk into the ExpressTech workshop at Dublin 2 Monday to Saturday without an appointment, and The exact price is confirmed up front where the charging fault is obvious. If you are outside Dublin, ExpressTech operates a nationwide Collection & Return service across Ireland, Monday to Friday, for €30 flat per shipment, round trip, tracked and insured, door to door.
ExpressTech has been trusted across Ireland since 2007 and holds 1,000+ Google reviews at 4.5 stars. Every completed charging port replacement carries a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship.

Cleaning or replacement — these are two different services
A charging port is an open socket that lives in a pocket. Lint, dust and fabric fibres are pushed to the bottom of it every time a cable goes in, and over months they compact into a dense pad. The cable then stops short of full contact. The phone charges intermittently, or only at an angle, or not at all — with a port that is mechanically perfect.
ExpressTech assesses the port first and cleans it where contamination is the cause. That is a €30 service. It is not a €30 charging port repair, and ExpressTech does not describe it as one — the port has not been repaired, it has been cleaned. Where cleaning does not resolve the fault, or the port is physically damaged, replacement is quoted separately at €89 standard, with the €30 credited toward it.
This order matters commercially as well as technically. A shop that replaces the port every time charges four times as much for a problem a toothpick-and-tweezers job would have fixed.
iPhone charging symptoms and what each usually means
The iPhone charges only when the cable is held at an angle, or pressed in. Almost always compacted debris preventing the connector seating fully. Cleaning usually resolves it.
The cable falls out or feels loose in the port. Either debris preventing full insertion, or worn retention clips inside the port. Assessment distinguishes them.
The iPhone charges wirelessly but not by cable. This strongly indicates a port-side fault rather than a battery or logic board problem, because the charging circuit itself is clearly working. It is one of the more useful things a customer can tell ExpressTech.
Charging is very slow, or the phone charges then stops. Often partial contact caused by debris; sometimes a failing cable or plug. Eliminate the cable and plug first — see Before you book.
"Liquid detected in Lightning connector" appearing repeatedly. Moisture or corrosion in the port. Do not override the warning and charge anyway. If the iPhone has been wet, read iPhone liquid damage repair, because the port may be the visible part of a wider problem.
The iPhone charges but no longer connects to a computer, or accessories no longer work. The data pins in the port have failed while the power pins still function. This is a genuine port fault and cleaning will not resolve it.
Visible damage — a bent pin, a widened socket, or scorching. Usually caused by a cable forced in at an angle, or a poor-quality third-party cable. This is a replacement, not a cleaning.
Before you book
These checks resolve a meaningful share of iPhone charging faults without any repair, and ExpressTech would rather you tried them.
Change the cable and the plug — separately. Cables fail far more often than ports, usually where the cable meets the connector. Test with a different cable, then a different mains plug. Do not test with a laptop USB port, which supplies less power and can make a healthy phone look faulty.
Look into the port with a torch. Hold the iPhone under a bright light and look straight into the charging port. A healthy port shows clean gold contacts and visible depth. A blocked port shows a flat grey pad of compacted lint sitting where the cable tip should reach.
Try clearing it yourself, carefully. With the iPhone powered off, a wooden or plastic toothpick used gently along the sides and base will often lift compacted lint out. Never use anything metal — a pin or paperclip bridges the contacts and can cause real damage that turns a cleaning into a replacement. If the phone then charges normally, no repair is needed.
Test wireless charging if your iPhone supports it. If wireless charging works and cable charging does not, that is useful diagnostic information and worth mentioning when you bring the phone in.
How charging port work runs at ExpressTech
Walking in to Dublin 2, the port is inspected under magnification and cleaned where contamination is the cause, usually while you wait. If the port has failed and replacement is required, that is quoted at €89 standard before any work begins, with the €30 cleaning credited toward it. A walk-in iPhone charging port repair is usually completed in about 60 minutes.
Sending an iPhone from outside Dublin, ExpressTech collects and returns it Monday to Friday for €30 flat per shipment, round trip, tracked and insured, door to door. The port is assessed on arrival and you are contacted with the finding — cleaning or replacement — and the price, before any work is carried out.
No additional work is ever carried out on your iPhone without asking you first.
After the repair
Your iPhone is tested before it is returned: charging by cable, charge rate, data connection to a computer, and accessory recognition where relevant. On models where the charging assembly also carries the microphone or antenna, those are tested too.
To keep a cleaned or replaced port working, the single most effective habit is keeping the iPhone in a pocket without loose lint, and inspecting the port occasionally with a torch. Ports refill with debris over years, not weeks — a cleaning is not a temporary fix, but it is not permanent immunity either.
Port cleaning does not require opening the iPhone and leaves the seals untouched. A port replacement does, and any iPhone that has been opened loses its original water-resistance rating — at any repair centre including Apple. ExpressTech reseals a replaced port, restoring splash resistance, but not the factory IP rating.
Warranty
Every completed iPhone charging port replacement at ExpressTech is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship. Port cleaning is a service rather than a part, so it carries no parts warranty — debris can accumulate again over time, which is normal use rather than a fault. ExpressTech explains that distinction before the work.
When ExpressTech would not recommend a charging port replacement
If cleaning resolves the fault, ExpressTech does not replace the port, and you pay €30 rather than €89. If the charging fault traces to the battery or the logic board rather than the port, replacing the port would not fix it — that is diagnosed first and explained, because a charging fault is a symptom, not automatically a port failure.
Common questions about iPhone charging port repair
Is my iPhone charging port broken, or just dirty? In roughly nine out of ten charging faults ExpressTech sees, compacted debris is the cause and cleaning resolves it. A port that charges at an angle is far more likely to be blocked than broken.
How much does an iPhone charging port repair cost at ExpressTech? Port cleaning is €30. Where the port itself has failed, the standard quoted replacement is €89, and the €30 cleaning is credited in full toward it.
Can I clean an iPhone charging port myself? Yes, carefully — with the phone powered off and using a wooden or plastic toothpick. Never use metal, which can bridge the contacts and cause damage far more expensive than the original fault.
Why does my iPhone charge wirelessly but not with a cable? That pattern points to the port rather than the battery or charging circuit, because the phone is clearly still able to take a charge. It is worth mentioning when you bring the phone in.
My iPhone says liquid detected but it has not been wet — what does that mean? The sensor detects moisture or corrosion in the port, which can follow humidity or a spill you did not notice. Do not override it and charge anyway; have the port assessed.
The questions people actually ask.
Why is my iPhone not charging?
The most common cause is compacted lint and debris inside the charging port. Pockets and bags press dust into the port every time the cable goes in, until the cable no longer seats deep enough to make contact. After that, the usual causes are a worn cable or charger, a port damaged by force or liquid, and, less often, a battery or board fault. We check in that order, starting with the cheapest explanation, and tell you what we find before any work begins.
Does the port need to be replaced, or can it be cleaned?
We always inspect and clean first where appropriate. The clean costs €30, and in many cases charging is restored without any parts being replaced. If cleaning does not resolve it, or the port itself is damaged, we quote the replacement and the €30 is credited in full toward it. You never pay for a replacement the device did not need.
How much does an iPhone charging port repair cost?
Port cleaning is €30 where contamination or debris is the cause. If cleaning does not resolve the fault and the port itself has failed, replacement is priced by model and quoted before any work begins, with the €30 clean credited toward it. Walk-in and prepay online prices are the same. Collection and return adds a flat €30 nationwide courier fee per shipment, covering both collection and return.
My cable feels loose, or only charges at certain angles. What does that mean?
A cable that needs to be held at an angle, or that falls out too easily, usually means debris is stopping it from seating fully, or the contacts inside the port have worn. Both get worse over time, so it is worth having the port inspected before it stops charging completely. After any port work we test cable fit, charging response and connection stability before the device comes back to you.
How long does a charging port repair take?
Most charging port repairs are completed the same day at our Dublin 2 store, and a straightforward clean is quicker than that. Timing is always confirmed before any work begins. If a part is not in stock, common parts can usually be sourced within 24 hours. Nationwide collection and return typically takes 3 to 4 working days door to door.
Do you repair both Lightning and USB-C iPhones?
Yes. We service the full range, from Lightning models through the USB-C iPhones Apple introduced with the iPhone 15. The cleaning-first approach is the same for both. If you are not sure which iPhone you have, check Settings, then General, then About, or bring it in and we will confirm the model for you.
Will my data be affected?
No. We do not access your personal data during standard hardware repairs. Your data is never accessed, transferred or erased unless you explicitly ask us to carry out a data-related service. We recommend keeping a backup as a general precaution before any repair.
What if the problem turns out to be something other than the port?
Sometimes a charging fault traces to the battery or the logic board rather than the port. If we find that, we stop and explain it clearly, with a quote, before doing anything further. No additional paid work is carried out without your approval. Every completed repair is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship.
