Know before you book
Should I stop using it? If glass is sharp or lifting, stop using the screen and keep the device in a case or bag until the repair.
What a successful repair restores A successful screen repair restores the display, touch and the surrounding functions we test before return.
Why does this happen? Usually a drop or a knock — even a small impact at the wrong angle can start a crack that then travels.Sometimes pressure rather than impact: a back pocket, a bag pressed tight, or something resting on the device.
What happens if you wait? Cracks tend to spread with everyday pressure and temperature changes, and broken glass leaves the display underneath open to moisture and dust. A screen that still responds today can deteriorate as the damage travels. There is no advantage to waiting — the repair does not get smaller.
Could a cheaper fix be enough? If the glass is intact but the display is black while the phone still rings or vibrates, don’t book a screen replacement yet — that pattern can be a connector or board issue, and an assessment first is the cheaper way to be sure. Read about devices that won’t turn on.

What an iPhone screen replacement actually replaces
On every modern iPhone the outer glass, the display panel and the touch layer are bonded into a single assembly. They cannot be separated economically, which is why a hairline crack in the glass and a completely dead display are the same repair: the whole assembly is replaced. Anyone offering to replace "just the glass" on an iPhone is describing a laminate process that ExpressTech does not consider reliable for customer devices.
From iPhone 12 onward Apple uses OLED panels across the range, which is why the correct term is screen replacement rather than screen repair — an OLED panel cannot be repaired once the panel itself has failed.
iPhone screen symptoms and what each one means
Cracked glass with the display still working normally. This is impact damage to the outer layer. The phone remains usable, which is why people delay, but a broken outer layer lets dust and moisture reach the display layers underneath. A straightforward iPhone screen replacement can become a more expensive repair if it is left for months.
A green, pink or white vertical line down the display. This is internal OLED panel failure, usually following a drop or sustained pressure — a phone in a back pocket, or under something heavy in a bag. The line does not recover on its own and typically widens or multiplies over days or weeks. Replacement is the only fix; no software reset affects it.
Ghost touch — the iPhone registering taps you did not make. The digitiser layer is misreading input, usually after impact or moisture exposure. The phone may open apps, type characters or answer calls by itself. This is a hardware fault and is resolved by replacing the assembly.
Touch working in some areas of the screen but not others. Either the digitiser has failed in that region, or the display connector has worked loose inside the phone — the second is common after a previous repair elsewhere. ExpressTech checks the connector before quoting a replacement, because a reseated connector is not a screen replacement.
A black screen on an iPhone that still rings, vibrates or connects to a computer. The phone is running; only the display has failed. This is usually a screen replacement rather than a deeper fault, and ExpressTech confirms it before quoting.
Dead pixels, black blotches or spreading dark patches. Pressure damage to the OLED panel. Dark patches spread; they do not heal. Replacement is the repair.
A screen lifting away from the frame at one edge. This is usually a swelling battery pushing the display out, not a screen fault. Stop using the phone and read the battery guidance on the iPhone battery replacement page — a swollen battery is a safety issue, and replacing the screen without addressing it would be wrong.
Before you book an iPhone screen replacement
Two checks are worth doing first, because they occasionally mean no screen replacement is needed.
If the iPhone display is blank but the phone seems alive: force a restart before assuming the screen has failed. On iPhone 8 and later, press volume up, then volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. A phone stuck in a software state can look exactly like a dead display.
If the screen flickers faintly at very low brightness: this is normal OLED dimming behaviour on iPhone and is not a fault. Do not replace a working screen because of it.
Back up your iPhone before any screen replacement. ExpressTech does not wipe phones to replace a screen and does not need your passcode for most screen work, but a phone with existing damage can fail further during any repair, at any workshop.
How an iPhone screen replacement runs at ExpressTech
Walking in to Dublin 2, your iPhone is assessed in front of you, the price and time are confirmed, and the replacement is usually completed in about 60 minutes while you wait. The original Face ID components are transferred to the new display, so Face ID continues to work — Face ID is paired to the individual iPhone and cannot be replaced by any third party if those components are themselves damaged. If that has happened, ExpressTech tells you before starting rather than after.
Sending an iPhone from outside Dublin, ExpressTech collects and returns it Monday to Friday for €30 flat per shipment, round trip, tracked and insured, door to door. The phone is inspected on arrival and you are contacted with the findings and the price before any work is carried out.
Screen quality options
ExpressTech fits Soft OLED screens — the iPhone screen standard — selected for colour accuracy, brightness and touch response, with one clear price per model. What is being fitted is explained before any work begins.
One thing to know before choosing: iOS may display a parts notice in Settings after a non-Genuine screen replacement, and True Tone behaviour can differ on some models. Neither affects how the screen performs day to day. ExpressTech raises both before the work rather than leaving them to be discovered afterwards.
After your iPhone screen replacement
Your iPhone is tested before it is returned: touch response across the whole screen, brightness, True Tone where applicable, Face ID, the earpiece speaker and the front camera — all of which sit behind or within the display assembly.
A replaced iPhone screen needs no calibration period and no special handling. If the display shows a parts notice in Settings after a non-Genuine replacement, that is expected behaviour and not a fault.
An iPhone loses its original water-resistance rating once the display has been opened, at any repair centre including Apple. The display seal is a significant part of the original barrier, so ExpressTech reseals it during reassembly — that restores splash resistance, but a repaired iPhone should not be treated as retaining its factory IP rating.
Warranty on iPhone screen replacement
Every completed iPhone screen replacement at ExpressTech is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship. It covers faulty parts and faulty workmanship — a panel that develops a fault, a touch layer that fails, a connector that was not seated correctly. It does not cover new accidental damage after the repair. If you drop the phone again, that is a new repair, and ExpressTech will tell you honestly which it is.
When ExpressTech would not recommend replacing an iPhone screen
If an older iPhone needs a screen and a battery and has rear glass damage, the combined cost can approach the price of a good replacement handset, and ExpressTech will say so before you commit. If a phone has a bent frame from a heavy impact, a new screen may not seat correctly — that is assessed and explained before any work is quoted, not discovered afterwards.
Common questions about iPhone screen replacement
Will Face ID still work after an iPhone screen replacement at ExpressTech? Yes, provided the original Face ID components are intact and transferred to the new display, which is standard practice at ExpressTech. Face ID is paired to the individual iPhone and cannot be replaced by any third party.
Can a cracked iPhone screen be repaired instead of replaced? No. The glass, display panel and touch layer are a single bonded assembly on every modern iPhone, so the assembly is replaced as one part. This is why the price does not change according to how large the crack is.
Why do some iPhone screen replacements cost several times more than others? Panel cost varies enormously by model. A current Pro Max OLED assembly costs many times what an older LCD assembly costs, which is why identifying the exact iPhone model is the first step in any accurate quote.
Will my iPhone still be water resistant after a screen replacement? No. An iPhone loses its factory water-resistance rating once opened, at any repair centre including Apple. ExpressTech reseals the device, which restores splash resistance, but the original IP rating cannot be restored.
Is it worth replacing the screen on an older iPhone? Often yes, if the rest of the phone is sound — a screen replacement is far cheaper than a replacement handset. Where it is not worth it, ExpressTech will tell you before you spend anything.
The questions people actually ask.
How much does an iPhone screen repair cost?
Pricing depends on your iPhone model. Each model has a clear price shown on its product page, and the final price is always confirmed before any work begins. Walk-in and prepay online prices are the same. Local Collection & Return in Dublin and local areas adds a flat 30 euro courier fee.
How long does an iPhone screen repair take?
Most iPhone screen repairs are completed in around 60 minutes. We'll always confirm the expected turnaround before any work begins. If a part is not in stock, common iPhone screen parts can usually be sourced within 24 hours. Some specialist parts may take a few working days.
Can I walk in without booking?
Yes. No booking is needed for most repairs at our Dublin 2 store. Drop in during opening hours and we will check the device, confirm the repair, and confirm timing before any work begins. You can also prepay online to skip the queue at the counter.
Is collection and return available across Ireland?
Local Collection & Return is available in Dublin and local areas for iPhone screen repairs. Most collection and return repairs are completed within 3 to 4 working days. Book the previous business day, or before 10:00am, for priority same-day collection in eligible Dublin city areas where available. From elsewhere in Ireland, post your device to us.
Will my data be affected during the screen repair?
No. Screen replacement is a hardware-only repair. We do not access your data during standard hardware repairs, and it is never accessed, transferred or erased unless you explicitly ask us to carry out a data-related service. We recommend keeping a backup as a general precaution before any hardware work.
Do you provide VAT invoices for business and school repairs?
Yes. We provide VAT invoices on every repair as standard. We support PO acceptance, asset-tag tracking, approved staff walk-in repair, and direct invoicing for business and school accounts. Send your team member in with the device, or ask us to arrange nationwide collection and return for fleet repairs, with terms confirmed per job.
