Know before you book
Should I stop using it? If glass is sharp or lifting, stop using the screen and keep the device in a case or bag until the repair.
What a successful repair restores A successful screen repair restores the display, touch and the surrounding functions we test before return.
Why does this happen? Usually a drop or a knock — even a small impact at the wrong angle can start a crack that then travels.Sometimes pressure rather than impact: a back pocket, a bag pressed tight, or something resting on the device.
What happens if you wait? Cracks tend to spread with everyday pressure and temperature changes, and broken glass leaves the display underneath open to moisture and dust. A screen that still responds today can deteriorate as the damage travels. There is no advantage to waiting — the repair does not get smaller.
Could a cheaper fix be enough? If the glass is intact but the display is black while the phone still rings or vibrates, don’t book a screen replacement yet — that pattern can be a connector or board issue, and an assessment first is the cheaper way to be sure. Read about devices that won’t turn on.

The green line, and why it is the fault we see most
A single vertical green, pink or white line down a Galaxy display is the most common screen fault Samsung phones develop, and it deserves a section of its own because so many people assume it is a software problem.
It is not. The line is a failure in the connection between the AMOLED panel and the driver circuitry that feeds it. One column of pixels stops receiving data and lights permanently. It commonly appears after a drop or after pressure on the screen, but it also appears on ageing phones with no trigger at all, sometimes shortly after a software update, which is why the update usually gets the blame.
Two things are worth knowing. It will not heal, and it usually spreads. A single line often becomes two or three over a period of weeks. Nothing in Settings, no factory reset and no update will remove it, because the fault is in the panel. Screen replacement is the only repair.
Why a Samsung screen replacement is a full assembly
On a Galaxy, the display is not a pane of glass sitting on top of a screen. The outer glass, the AMOLED panel and the touch layer are laminated into one sealed unit, and on most models that unit is bonded into the phone's frame with adhesive that has to be heated to release.
This is why ExpressTech replaces the whole display assembly rather than offering a glass-only repair. Glass-only refurbishment exists in the industry: the cracked glass is separated from the panel and a new sheet is bonded on.
It is cheaper, and it is the reason a lot of Samsung screen repairs fail a few months later, because the re-lamination is rarely as good as the factory one and the touch layer often suffers. ExpressTech does not do it.
The practical consequence is that a Samsung screen repair costs more than the equivalent iPhone repair on a comparable model. That is a real difference and it is better stated plainly than discovered at the counter.
Curved and edge displays
Galaxy S Ultra models and several earlier Edge models curve the display around the sides of the phone. Two things follow from that. They crack more readily, because a side impact lands directly on glass rather than on a metal rail, and the assembly costs more because curved panels are more expensive to produce.
If you own an Ultra, a case with a raised edge along the sides makes a genuine difference to how a dropped phone lands. That is advice, not a sale.
Your fingerprint sensor is part of the screen
On most modern Galaxy models the fingerprint reader is an ultrasonic sensor mounted under the display, not a separate button. When the display assembly is replaced, that sensor is replaced with it.
What this means for you is simple. Your stored fingerprints will no longer match after the repair, and you will be asked to delete and re-register them. It takes a minute. It is expected behaviour and not a fault, and ExpressTech will walk you through it when handing the phone back. Face recognition and your PIN or pattern are unaffected.
Burn-in, and when replacing a working screen is worth it
AMOLED panels can retain a faint permanent image of anything displayed in a fixed position for long periods, usually the navigation bar, the status icons or a keyboard. It shows up most on a grey or white background.
Burn-in cannot be repaired, reversed by software, or fixed by any app claiming to do so. Screen replacement is the only remedy. Whether it is worth doing is genuinely your call: on a phone you plan to keep for years it may be worth it, and on a phone you plan to trade in within a year it usually is not. ExpressTech will give you an honest view rather than a quote by default.
Before you book a Samsung screen repair
If the display is black but the phone still rings or vibrates, force a restart first by holding Volume Down and the Side key together for around ten seconds. A Galaxy that has crashed can present exactly like a dead screen. If it comes back, the display is fine.
If touch has stopped responding but the image is perfect, the digitiser has failed and the screen still needs replacing. It is worth checking one thing first: remove any screen protector, particularly a thick tempered-glass one. On a Galaxy with an under-display fingerprint sensor, a poorly fitted protector can interfere with touch response at the edges.
If the screen is cracked but everything still works, do not leave it. Once the seal is broken, moisture and dust reach the panel. A phone that arrives with cracked glass and a working display is a screen replacement. The same phone three weeks later, after a rainy commute, can be a screen replacement plus liquid damage treatment.
If the phone was dropped and the screen went dark at the same moment as another symptom, tell ExpressTech. A drop hard enough to kill a display can also unseat other connectors, and it changes what gets checked first.
Parts and quality on Samsung screens
Samsung screen repairs at ExpressTech use an Original OEM Samsung Display.
Unlike iPhone screen repairs, this is a single quality standard rather than a choice between tiers. That is a deliberate position. Samsung panel supply does not offer a genuine second tier that ExpressTech would be willing to fit, and the alternatives that do circulate are the glass-only refurbishments described above. Rather than present a cheaper option and then explain why you should not choose it, ExpressTech fits one standard.
You are not paying for an upgrade, and you are not being steered. There is one screen, it is the right one, and the price is the price.
What happens during the repair
The phone is powered down and the display adhesive is heated and released. The old assembly is removed, connectors are inspected for damage from the original impact, and the new assembly is fitted and sealed. The phone is then tested: the full display area for dead pixels or discolouration, touch response across the whole surface including the curved edges, brightness and auto-brightness, the proximity sensor, the earpiece, the front camera and the fingerprint sensor.
Your data is not accessed, transferred or erased. A passcode is not required for a screen replacement. Keep a backup as a general precaution before any repair regardless, because hardware that is already failing can fail further during a repair.
Warranty on a Samsung screen replacement
Every completed repair at ExpressTech is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship. It covers faulty parts and workmanship, but does not cover new accidental damage, misuse or unrelated faults after the repair.
In practice, on a screen, the warranty covers a panel that develops dead pixels, discolouration, touch failure or a line of its own accord. It does not cover the phone being dropped again.
Common questions about Samsung screen repair
Will my Galaxy still be water resistant afterwards? No. Releasing the display adhesive breaks the factory seal, and no repair centre can restore it. ExpressTech reseals the assembly, which returns splash resistance. Why the original rating cannot come back is explained on the Samsung liquid damage page.
Will I lose my photos or apps? No. A screen replacement does not touch your storage, and the phone is not wiped in order to repair it.
Is the replacement screen as good as the original? It is an Original OEM Samsung Display, so the panel technology, resolution and refresh rate match what the phone left the factory with.
Can you fix just the cracked glass and keep my panel? No, and it is a deliberate refusal rather than a limitation. See the section above on why ExpressTech replaces the full assembly.
My screen is cracked and the phone is otherwise perfect. Is it worth repairing? On a Galaxy S flagship, usually yes. On an older mid-range A-series phone, the screen can approach the value of the handset, and ExpressTech will tell you that before you commit. The questions people actually ask.
How long do Samsung repairs usually take?
Most Samsung screen and battery repairs are completed the same day at our Dublin 2 store. Visit our store any time during opening hours, no appointment needed. For Local Collection & Return customers, allow 3 to 4 working days.
Is my data safe during a Samsung repair?
Yes. We do not access your data during standard hardware repairs, and it is never accessed, transferred or erased unless you explicitly ask us to carry out a data-related service. We recommend keeping a backup as a general precaution.
What warranty do you provide on Samsung repairs?
Every completed repair is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship. It covers faulty parts and workmanship, but does not cover new accidental damage, misuse or unrelated faults after the repair. Liquid damage repairs are excluded from the 12-month warranty due to the risk of ongoing corrosion.
