Assessment is free where the fault is clear — screen, battery, back glass and obvious charging issues. Complex faults, including liquid damage, no-power, intermittent faults and logic board issues, carry a €30 diagnostic fee. If you go ahead with the quoted repair, the €30 is credited in full toward the repair cost. If the device cannot be repaired, no repair charge applies beyond any agreed diagnostic or assessment fee.

How to read your iPhone Battery Health
Open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health & Charging. Maximum Capacity is the percentage of the original capacity the battery can still hold. Apple flags service at around 80%, but that figure is a guideline rather than a verdict.
How the iPhone behaves matters more than the number. An iPhone at 82% that comfortably lasts the day does not need a battery. An iPhone at 85% that shuts down at 30% charge does, because sudden shutdowns indicate the cell can no longer deliver current under load — a different failure from simply holding less charge. ExpressTech judges a battery on behaviour first and the percentage second.
If Battery Health shows Service, the battery has degraded significantly or iOS cannot verify it. If it shows Unknown Part or Important Battery Message, a non-Genuine battery has been fitted at some point — that is a reporting message, not a fault, and the battery may be working perfectly.
iPhone battery symptoms and what causes them
The iPhone shuts down above 20% charge. The cell cannot sustain voltage under load, so iOS shuts down to protect the phone. This is the clearest single indicator that an iPhone battery replacement is needed, and it usually worsens quickly.
Battery drops sharply in cold weather. Lithium-ion chemistry slows in the cold, and a worn cell has no margin left. This is why an Irish winter exposes a battery that seemed adequate indoors — a phone that dies walking to the bus is showing wear, not a software fault.
The iPhone feels slower than it used to. iOS reduces peak performance on iPhones with worn batteries to prevent shutdowns. This is a documented Apple behaviour, and replacing the battery restores full performance. A slow iPhone with a worn battery does not need replacing as a phone.
The iPhone gets hot while charging, or charges very slowly. Heat during charging indicates internal resistance in an ageing cell. It is worth having assessed rather than ignored.
The screen is lifting away from the frame, or the phone rocks on a flat table. This is a swollen battery, and it is the one battery symptom that is genuinely urgent. A swelling cell is under pressure and can damage the display, the frame and, rarely, worse. Stop charging the iPhone, stop using it, and bring it in. Do not press the screen back down.
Battery percentage jumping — 40% to 15% and back. The battery's reported state of charge has become unreliable. This is cell degradation rather than a software glitch, and no amount of recalibration corrects it permanently.
Before you book an iPhone battery replacement
Two checks are worth doing first, because both can look like a failing battery.
Check what is actually using the battery. Settings, Battery shows usage by app over the last 24 hours and 10 days. A single misbehaving app, or a phone that has just restored from a backup and is re-indexing, can drain a healthy battery in hours. If one app dominates, that is worth resolving before paying for a battery.
Check storage. Settings, General, iPhone Storage. An iPhone with under roughly 1GB free struggles constantly, which shows up as heat and drain. Clearing space sometimes resolves what looks like battery failure entirely.
Battery calibration is a myth worth ignoring. Fully draining and recharging an iPhone does not restore lost capacity. Modern lithium-ion cells do not have a memory effect. If a battery has degraded, no charging routine reverses it.
How an iPhone battery replacement runs at ExpressTech
Walking in to Dublin 2, your iPhone is assessed in front of you, the price and time confirmed, and the replacement is usually completed in about 60 minutes while you wait. ExpressTech does not wipe iPhones to replace a battery and does not need your passcode for most battery work.
Sending an iPhone from outside Dublin, ExpressTech collects and returns it Monday to Friday for €30 flat per shipment, round trip, tracked and insured, door to door. The phone is inspected on arrival and you are contacted with the price before any work is carried out.
Back up your iPhone before any battery replacement regardless of route. Hardware that is already failing can fail further during a repair, at any workshop.
Battery quality options
On iPhone batteries you choose between two battery qualities — both prices shown up front, with Genuine Apple available where supply allows — each selected for capacity, cycle life and safety certification. The difference is explained before any work begins.
One consequence is worth understanding before you choose. On many iPhone models, fitting a non-Genuine battery removes the Maximum Capacity percentage from Settings and displays a service or unknown-part message instead. The battery charges, holds and performs normally — iOS simply stops reporting on a cell it cannot authenticate. This is Apple's pairing behaviour, not a defect in the battery, and it applies to every independent repairer.
ExpressTech does not fit uncertified cells. Battery safety is not a place to save money, and a cheap cell is the one component that can genuinely damage a phone.
After your iPhone battery replacement
Your iPhone is tested before it is returned: charging behaviour, charge retention under load, and the surrounding components that must be disconnected to reach the battery.
Use the phone normally afterwards. There is no run-in period, no need to drain it fully, and no calibration ritual. Expect the first full charge cycle to report slightly differently as iOS establishes a baseline.
Reaching the battery means opening the iPhone, and an iPhone loses its original water-resistance rating once opened — at any repair centre including Apple. ExpressTech reseals the device on reassembly, restoring splash resistance, but the factory IP rating cannot be restored by anyone.
Warranty on iPhone battery replacement
Every completed iPhone battery replacement at ExpressTech is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship. It covers a cell that fails prematurely or degrades abnormally fast, and any fault in the workmanship. It does not cover normal wear over that period — all lithium-ion batteries lose capacity gradually with use, and that is expected behaviour rather than a fault.
When ExpressTech would not recommend replacing an iPhone battery
If Battery Health is above 85% and the phone behaves normally, a battery replacement is unlikely to change anything you would notice, and ExpressTech will say so rather than take the work. If heavy drain traces to a single app or a software state, the battery is not the fault. And if an older iPhone needs a battery plus a screen plus rear glass, the combined cost can approach a good replacement handset — you will be told that before you commit.
Common questions about iPhone battery replacement
Will I lose the Battery Health percentage after a battery replacement? If a non-Genuine battery is fitted, iOS stops reporting Maximum Capacity and shows a service or unknown-part message instead. The battery works normally; iOS simply cannot authenticate it. This applies to every independent repairer, not only ExpressTech.
At what Battery Health percentage should an iPhone battery be replaced? Apple flags service around 80%, but behaviour matters more. Unexpected shutdowns above 20% charge are a stronger signal than any percentage.
Is a swollen iPhone battery dangerous? A swollen battery should be treated as urgent. Stop charging and stop using the iPhone, do not press the lifted screen back down, and have it replaced promptly. A swelling cell is under pressure and can damage the display and frame.
Will replacing the battery make my old iPhone faster? If iOS has been limiting peak performance because of a worn battery, then yes — replacing the battery restores full performance. That is a documented Apple behaviour and one of the most common reasons an older iPhone feels slow.
Does draining the battery fully help recalibrate it? No. Lithium-ion cells have no memory effect, and no charging routine restores lost capacity.
The questions people actually ask.
How do I know if my iPhone battery needs replacing?
Common signs include rapid battery drain through the day, unexpected shutdowns even with charge remaining, slow or unreliable charging, your device only working while plugged into power, a battery health warning shown by iOS, or a swollen battery. If any of these sound familiar, a battery replacement may be the right repair. Our technicians confirm the fault before any work begins.
How much does an iPhone battery replacement cost?
Pricing depends on your iPhone model. Each model has a clear price shown on its product page, and the final price is always confirmed before any work begins. Walk-in and prepay online prices are the same. Collection and return adds a flat 30 euro nationwide courier fee. A Genuine Apple Battery Option is available on iPhone where supported, alongside our Premium Battery Replacement tier.
How long does an iPhone battery replacement take?
Most iPhone battery replacements are completed in around 60 minutes. We'll always confirm the expected turnaround before any work begins. If a part is not in stock, common iPhone batteries can usually be sourced within 24 hours. Some specialist parts may take a few working days.
Can I walk in without booking?
Yes. No booking is needed for most repairs at our Dublin 2 store. Drop in during opening hours and we will check the device, confirm the repair, and confirm timing before any work begins. You can also prepay online to skip the queue at the counter.
Will my data be affected during the battery replacement?
No. Battery replacement is a hardware-only repair. We do not access your data during standard hardware repairs, and it is never accessed, transferred or erased unless you explicitly ask us to carry out a data-related service. We recommend keeping a backup as a general precaution before any hardware work.
Is collection and return available across Ireland?
Yes. We offer tracked, insured nationwide collection and return for iPhone battery replacements. Most collection and return repairs are completed within 3 to 4 working days. Order before 11am for priority same-day collection in eligible Dublin city areas where available.
Do you provide VAT invoices for business and school repairs?
Yes. We provide VAT invoices on every repair as standard. We support PO acceptance, asset-tag tracking, approved staff walk-in repair, and direct invoicing for business and school accounts. Send your team member in with the device, or book nationwide collection and return for fleet repairs.
Bring us the iPhone.
