Which iPad mini do you have, and what it means for the repair
Identifying your iPad mini
The mini kept the same broad shape for six generations, so the visual check is coarse and the exact answer comes from the device itself.
A round Home button means a mini 1 through 5. No Home button, flat edges and Touch ID built into the power button means a mini 6 or 7.
For the exact generation, open Settings, then General, then About, and read Model Name, or read the A-number printed on the back. On this family that step matters more than most, because several generations look nearly identical and use different parts.
The repair pattern that is specific to the mini
The iPad mini gets dropped more than any other iPad, and the reason is simply that it is used one-handed. A device you hold in one hand while doing something else with the other is a device that eventually gets away from you.
Because it is small and stiff, a mini also tends to land on a corner rather than flat, which concentrates the impact. The result is the fault ExpressTech sees most on this family: a corner-origin crack that spreads across the display.
The second pattern is being sat on or packed under something. A mini goes into bags and pockets that a full-size iPad never would, and a bent chassis is a genuinely different repair from a cracked screen. If your mini no longer sits flat on a table, say so when you book.
Batteries in a small tablet
The mini carries a physically smaller battery than any other iPad, so the same percentage of wear removes more of a usable day. An older mini that needs charging by lunchtime is showing normal ageing rather than a defect.
iPad batteries fall between €100 and €150 depending on the model. As with any iPad, if the screen has started to lift away from the chassis at an edge, stop charging it and bring it in, because a swelling cell will crack the display if it is left.
Before you book
If the mini will not turn on, force a restart. On Home-button models, hold Home and the top button together. On the mini 6 and 7, press volume up, then volume down, then hold the top button.
If it will not charge, try a different cable and a mains adapter, then check the port with a torch. A small device carried in a bag collects lint in the port faster than one that lives on a desk.
If the screen is cracked but working, do not leave it for months. Dust and moisture reach the panel through the crack, and one repair can become two.
Your data
Your data is not accessed, transferred or erased during a standard hardware repair, and the device is not wiped in order to repair it. Keep a backup as a general precaution, because hardware that is already failing can fail further during a repair.
For liquid damage, data recovery cannot be guaranteed by ExpressTech or by anyone else.
When an iPad mini is not worth repairing
On an iPad mini 1, 2 or 3, a screen replacement is difficult to justify against what the device is worth and how little current software it will run. ExpressTech will tell you that rather than take the work.
From the mini 4 onward the answer changes, and on a mini 6 or 7 repair is straightforwardly worthwhile. Identify the generation first and the decision usually makes itself.
Warranty
Every completed repair at ExpressTech is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship. It covers faulty parts and workmanship, but does not cover new accidental damage, misuse or unrelated faults after the repair.
Liquid damage repairs are excluded from the 12-month warranty due to the risk of ongoing corrosion, and this is explained before any liquid damage work is approved.
Common questions about iPad mini repairs
How long does it take? Screen and battery replacements are usually completed the same day. Liquid damage is diagnostic work and depends on the fault.
My mini is slightly bent. Can that be fixed? A bent chassis is not straightened, because the frame has deformed and forcing it back stresses everything mounted to it. What ExpressTech can do is assess whether a screen can still be fitted and sealed properly, and tell you honestly if it cannot.
Will Touch ID still work afterwards? Yes, when the original component is intact and transferred. If the component itself is damaged, it is factory-paired and no repairer can replace it.
Is the mini harder to repair than a bigger iPad? It is more tightly packed, so it takes more care, but it is a routine repair for a workshop that does them regularly.
Will I lose my data? No. The iPad is not wiped in order to repair it.
