What the camera lens glass actually is

The raised circles on the back of an iPhone are sapphire-crystal covers protecting the camera optics beneath. They are separate parts from both the flat rear glass panel and the camera modules inside. On multi-camera iPhones each camera has its own cover, and they can be damaged individually — one cracked lens with the others perfect is common.

Because the cover is a separate part, a cracked camera lens does not require replacing the camera or the rear panel. This is one of the least expensive iPhone repairs, and it is worth knowing that before accepting a quote for something larger.

What cracked camera lens glass does to your photos

The lens glass is missing entirely. Urgent. The camera optics are directly exposed to dust, pocket lint and moisture, and contamination inside the module cannot be cleaned out afterwards.

Before you book

Clean the lenses properly first. A microfibre cloth and a breath of moisture. Fingerprint oil produces haze and flare almost identical to crack damage, and this costs nothing to rule out.

Look at the lenses under a bright light at an angle. Hairline cracks in sapphire are almost invisible face-on and obvious when the light catches them. Tilt the phone slowly.

Take a test photo toward a bright light. If streaks or flare appear in a fixed pattern that repeats in every shot, the glass is cracked. If images are simply soft or hunting for focus with clean glass, the module is the problem and you want the other page.

Check every lens separately. On multi-camera iPhones, switch between 0.5x, 1x and telephoto. Only the damaged lens will show the effect, which confirms the diagnosis and tells ExpressTech exactly which cover to replace.
