Can I keep using it? Yes — a camera fault is inconvenient rather than dangerous, and using the device does not make it worse. Repair when it suits you.
What a successful repair restores A successful camera repair restores the repaired camera; focus and the surrounding functions affected by the repair are tested before return.
Why does this happen? Often an impact near the lens — the camera module and its glass sit right where corner drops land.Sometimes it’s software, not hardware — especially if the fault appeared right after an update.

The rattle, and what it actually is
If your Galaxy makes a faint rattling or buzzing sound when it vibrates, and photos have gone soft at the same time, those two symptoms are one fault.
Samsung's main rear cameras use optical image stabilisation. The lens element is suspended on tiny springs and moved by magnets many times a second to cancel out hand shake. When that mechanism fails, usually after a drop, the lens is left loose in its housing. It rattles when the phone vibrates, and it can no longer hold the image steady, so photos come out blurred, particularly in low light where the exposure is longer.
This cannot be recalibrated in software and no app will fix it. The camera module is replaced. It is worth doing promptly, because a loose stabiliser assembly can wear against the parts around it.
Symptoms and what each usually means
"Camera failed" or a black preview when the app opens. Restart the phone first, then clear the camera app's cache in Settings, Apps, Camera, Storage. If it comes back after that, it was software. If the preview stays black on a phone that has been dropped, the module or its connector has failed.
Photos are blurry no matter what you do. Clean the outside of the camera glass first, because a smear of sun cream or pocket grease produces exactly this. If it persists on a clean lens, the autofocus mechanism has usually failed.
One camera works and another does not. Galaxy phones carry several separate rear cameras: a main wide, an ultra-wide, and on Ultra models one or two telephoto units. They are independent modules, so the ultra-wide can fail while the main camera is perfect.
Switch between 0.6x, 1x, 3x and 10x in the camera app and note which zoom levels are affected. That tells ExpressTech which module to quote, and it often makes the repair cheaper than assuming the whole array is gone.
A purple, green or milky haze over photos, usually worst pointing toward a light source. This is normally moisture or damage behind the camera glass rather than a module fault. If the phone has been near water, treat it as a liquid case first. See Samsung liquid damage repair.
The telephoto or zoom camera is soft while the main camera is sharp. On Ultra models the long zoom is a periscope camera, with the lens turned sideways inside the phone and the image folded by a prism. It has more moving parts than the other cameras and it is the one most often damaged by a drop.
Selfies are blurry or the front camera will not open. The front camera is a separate module in the punch-hole cutout of the display. It is replaced independently of the rear cameras and is a less expensive repair.
Faces look soft only in portrait mode, or the phone cannot judge depth. Some Galaxy models use a depth sensor alongside the main cameras, and it can fail on its own while ordinary photos stay perfect.
Scratched camera glass on a Galaxy
This is worth explaining because it works differently on Samsung phones than on some others.
On most Galaxy models the glass covering the rear cameras is not a separate serviceable part. It is bonded into the rear housing assembly, so a chipped or scratched camera cover is a rear housing job rather than a small lens swap, and ExpressTech does not currently offer it as a repair on Samsung.
What this means in practice: if your camera glass is scratched but photos are still sharp, no repair is needed and none is being sold to you. If the glass is shattered and it is degrading your photos, ExpressTech will tell you honestly that the fix is a housing replacement rather than quoting a camera module that will not solve it.
Before you book a Samsung camera repair
Clean the glass properly. A microfibre cloth and a breath of moisture. Fingerprints and sun cream are the single most common cause of "my camera is broken".
Take off the case. Thick cases and cheap magnetic mounts can sit over the edge of a camera, producing dark corners or forcing the phone to focus on the case rather than the subject.
Restart, then clear the camera app cache. Settings, Apps, Camera, Storage, Clear cache. This resolves a genuine share of "camera failed" errors with no repair at all.
Test every camera before you come in. Open the camera app, take one photo at each zoom level, switch to the front camera, and try video. Knowing exactly which cameras are affected shortens the diagnosis and can reduce the cost.
Check whether it started after a drop. Tell ExpressTech if it did. A drop that damages a camera often unseats other connectors, and it changes what gets checked first.
What happens during the repair
The rear panel is heated to release its adhesive and removed, and the camera bracket is lifted to reach the modules. Only the failed module is replaced where the fault is isolated to one camera. The phone is reassembled and resealed, then tested: every rear camera at each zoom level, the front camera, autofocus, stabilisation, flash, video recording and audio capture during video.
Your photos are not touched. Your data is not accessed, transferred or erased, and a passcode is not required. Keep a backup as a general precaution before any repair regardless.

On a camera, that covers a replaced module that fails to focus, loses stabilisation or stops responding on its own. It does not cover a second drop.
When a camera repair is worth it, and when it is not
On a Galaxy S flagship where the main camera has failed, the repair is usually worthwhile, because the camera is a large part of what the phone is for and the alternative is replacing the handset.
Where ExpressTech would pause is a failed ultra-wide or telephoto on an older phone, where the main camera is perfect and you rarely use the other lenses. That is a real conversation worth having rather than an automatic quote, and you will get an honest view of it before you commit.
Common questions about Samsung camera repair
How long does it take? Usually 2 to 4 hours.
Will I lose my photos? No. Replacing a camera does not touch your storage, and the phone is not wiped in order to repair it.
Will the phone still be water resistant? No. Reaching the camera modules means opening the housing, and the factory seal cannot be restored by anyone afterwards. ExpressTech reseals it, which returns splash resistance. See the Samsung liquid damage page.
Can you replace just the scratched glass over the camera? Not on Samsung. See the section above on why the camera cover is part of the rear housing.
My camera works but photos look worse than they used to. Compare against a photo taken a year ago on the same phone. Software updates change image processing, and a difference in how photos are rendered is not the same as a hardware fault. If the older photo looks the same as today's, nothing has failed.
