Back glass replacement on the iPhone 12 series, in detail
On this generation the rear glass is bonded to the frame and needs laser separation to remove cleanly, which is why it is priced as workshop work. The iPhone back glass repair page covers the method.
MagSafe sits behind the glass you are replacing
This is the detail specific to the iPhone 12 generation, and it is worth asking any repairer about.
A ring of magnets and the wireless charging coil sit directly behind the rear glass. When the glass is replaced, that assembly has to be transferred or replaced correctly, or MagSafe accessories stop snapping into place and wireless charging can become unreliable.
ExpressTech tests MagSafe alignment and wireless charging before the phone goes back to you. If a repair elsewhere has left your MagSafe not gripping properly, that is usually what happened.

Why flat sides make this more common
The iPhone 12 dropped the curved edges of the 11 for flat rails, and a flat-sided phone is more likely to land square on its back. Rear glass damage is noticeably more common from this generation onward for exactly that reason.
