Apple Watch Ultra repairs, and what makes this model different
Confirming you have an Ultra
The Ultra is unmistakable next to a standard Apple Watch. It is noticeably larger and thicker, the case is titanium rather than aluminium or steel, and there is an extra orange-accented Action button on the left-hand side that no other Apple Watch has.
To confirm which generation, open the Watch app on your iPhone, then General, then About, and read the Model name. ExpressTech confirms it on arrival at no cost.
What the Ultra is built for, and what that means when it breaks
The Ultra is built for conditions that would finish an ordinary watch: diving, open water, cold, altitude and hard impact. The titanium case has a raised rim around the display specifically to protect the glass.
Two consequences follow when something does go wrong.
The first is that Ultra damage tends to arrive with a story. These watches are worn for sea swimming, climbing, cycling and long-distance running, and the faults that reach the bench are usually a hard, specific impact or a genuine water event rather than everyday wear. Tell ExpressTech what happened, because it changes what gets checked first.
The second is that the Ultra is engineered to a higher sealing standard than any other Apple Watch, and that is precisely what cannot be restored once it has been opened.
Water resistance after a repair, and why it matters more on this watch
This is the most important thing on this page, and it deserves to be stated without softening.
The Ultra's dive-rated water resistance comes from a factory seal on a new watch. Once it has been opened for any repair, at any repair centre including Apple, that certification is gone and it cannot be reinstated.
ExpressTech reseals the watch during reassembly, and that restores resistance to rain, sweat and splashes. It does not make the watch dive-rated again. A repaired Apple Watch Ultra should not be used for diving or open-water swimming.
If you bought the Ultra specifically for water use, that is a genuine consideration in deciding whether to repair it at all, and it is better weighed before the repair than discovered after it. ExpressTech would rather have that conversation with you up front.
Batteries
The Ultra carries the largest battery in the Apple Watch line, and owners are used to multi-day life from it, so decline is noticed sharply when it comes. That is ordinary lithium ageing rather than a defect.
A screen that has lifted or detached needs an inspection before we choose a repair. We check the screen, adhesive and battery, then confirm whether the €50 regluing service or a different repair is appropriate. Battery and screen replacement are priced separately.
Stop using or charging a damaged watch, and do not try to press or glue the screen back down yourself. Contact us for an assessment. Apple’s safety guidance also advises against using a damaged Apple Watch or attempting a repair yourself.
Before you book
If it will not turn on, charge it for at least half an hour, then force a restart by holding the side button and the Digital Crown together for around ten seconds.
If it will not charge, clean the back of the watch and the charging puck. Salt residue after sea swimming is a specific and common cause on this model, and it is worth ruling out before booking anything.
If the watch has been in the sea and is now misbehaving, treat it as urgent. Salt water is far more corrosive than fresh, and the outcome depends heavily on how quickly the watch is opened and cleaned. Rinse it in fresh water, dry it, do not charge it, and bring it in the same day if you can.
Your data
Your data is not accessed, transferred or erased during a standard hardware repair, and the watch is not wiped in order to repair it. Most Apple Watch data is mirrored from the paired iPhone, so keeping that phone backed up is the practical step.
Is an Ultra worth repairing?
Generally yes. These are recent, expensive watches, and a battery or screen repair is a small fraction of replacing one.
The exception is the water-resistance point above. If the whole purpose of your Ultra is diving, a repaired watch will no longer serve that purpose, and an honest assessment of what you actually need should come before any quote. ExpressTech will give you that assessment rather than simply taking the booking.
Warranty
Every completed repair at ExpressTech is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship. It covers faulty parts and workmanship, but does not cover new accidental damage, misuse or unrelated faults after the repair.
Liquid damage repairs are excluded from the 12-month warranty due to the risk of ongoing corrosion, and this is explained before any liquid damage work is approved.
Common questions about Apple Watch Ultra repairs
How long will it take? Typical turnaround is confirmed before work begins. The Ultra needs particularly careful resealing, so a realistic time is given once the watch has been assessed.
Can I dive with it after a repair? No. The dive rating does not survive the watch being opened, here or at Apple. This is the single most important thing to understand before repairing an Ultra.
The titanium case is scratched. Can that be polished out? ExpressTech does not refinish titanium cases. Scratches on an Ultra are cosmetic and do not affect how the watch works, and attempting to polish the case risks the finish and the seals.
My Ultra was in the sea and now will not charge. Is it ruined? Not necessarily, but treat it as urgent. Rinse it in fresh water, dry it, do not charge it, and bring it in as soon as possible. Salt corrosion progresses over hours.
Does the Action button still work after a repair? Yes, and it is tested before the watch is returned. If it had stopped working before the repair, say so when you book, because it is checked separately.
