Which Apple Watch do you have, and what it means for the repair
Identifying your Apple Watch
Apple Watch is the hardest Apple device to identify by eye, because the case has changed shape only subtly across many generations and the size is printed nowhere obvious.
The reliable route is the phone. On your iPhone, open the Watch app, then General, then About, and read the Model name and Case size. If the watch will not pair or power on, remove the strap and look at the small text engraved on the back of the case, which carries the model information.
Case size matters as much as generation here. A 41mm and a 45mm watch of the same series use different screens, so a quote depends on both.
Why an Apple Watch repair is not a small iPhone repair
People often expect a watch screen to be cheaper than a phone screen because it is smaller. It is worth explaining why that is not how it works.
An Apple Watch is a sealed, water-resistant device with a display bonded to the case and almost no internal space. Opening one and resealing it properly is delicate work, the display assembly is expensive relative to the size of the device, and the tolerances are tighter than on a phone.
The honest consequence is that on several older Series models, the cost of a screen replacement approaches or exceeds what the watch is worth. ExpressTech will tell you that before you commit rather than after the work is done. On a recent Series watch the calculation is usually the other way and the repair is clearly worthwhile.
A lifting or detached screen: check the cause first
A screen that has lifted or detached needs an inspection before we choose a repair. We check the screen, adhesive and battery, then confirm whether the €50 regluing service or a different repair is appropriate. Battery and screen replacement are priced separately.
Stop using or charging a damaged watch, and do not try to press or glue the screen back down yourself. Contact us for an assessment. Apple’s safety guidance also advises against using a damaged Apple Watch or attempting a repair yourself.
Before you book
If the watch will not turn on, put it on the charger for at least half an hour before assuming anything, then force a restart by holding the side button and the Digital Crown together for around ten seconds. A watch that has run fully flat can take a while to show any sign of life.
If it will not charge, check the back of the watch and the charging puck for anything sticky. Suncream, moisturiser and sweat residue build up on the charging surface and are a genuinely common cause. Clean both with a slightly damp cloth and try again.
If it is behaving oddly rather than broken, unpair and re-pair it from the iPhone before booking a repair. A surprising share of watch faults are pairing faults.
Water resistance, stated plainly
Apple Watch is sold as water resistant, and that rating comes from a factory seal on a new device. Once the watch has been opened for any repair, at any repair centre, that seal is gone.
ExpressTech reseals the watch during reassembly, which restores resistance to splashes and rain. It does not restore the original rating, and a repaired Apple Watch should not be taken swimming or into the sea. That is true wherever the repair is carried out, and you should be cautious of anyone who tells you otherwise.
Your data
Your data is not accessed, transferred or erased during a standard hardware repair, and the watch is not wiped in order to repair it. Most of what lives on an Apple Watch is mirrored from the paired iPhone in any case, so keeping that phone backed up is the practical precaution.
When an Apple Watch is not worth repairing
On a Series 1, 2 or 3, almost no repair is worth its cost today. Those watches run little current software and are worth very little, and ExpressTech will say so rather than take the work.
From Series 4 onward the answer improves, and on a recent watch a battery replacement is usually a straightforwardly good decision. A watch that only needs a battery is often the best-value repair in this family.
Warranty
Every completed repair at ExpressTech is backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and workmanship. It covers faulty parts and workmanship, but does not cover new accidental damage, misuse or unrelated faults after the repair.
Liquid damage repairs are excluded from the 12-month warranty due to the risk of ongoing corrosion, and this is explained before any liquid damage work is approved.
Common questions about Apple Watch repairs
How long will it take? Typical turnaround is confirmed before work begins. Apple Watch repairs need careful resealing, so ExpressTech gives you a realistic time once the watch has been assessed rather than quoting a figure in advance.
My screen has lifted off but still works. What should I do? Stop using or charging it and contact us for an assessment. A lifted screen alone does not establish the cause. We check the screen, adhesive and battery before recommending €50 regluing or a separately priced repair.
Can I still swim with it after a repair? No. The factory water-resistance rating does not survive the watch being opened, here or anywhere.
Can you repair a cracked screen protector rather than the screen? If the crack is only in an applied protector, peel it off and check the glass underneath first. It costs nothing to look, and it is occasionally the whole answer.
Do you repair the strap or the crown? Straps are user-replaceable and need no repair. If the Digital Crown has stopped turning or clicking, mention it when you book, because it is assessed separately from the screen.
