Running hot

My device is running hot

Some warmth is normal while charging, gaming or navigating. Heat that arrives with fast battery drain, heat when the device is idle, or heat after contact with liquid is different, and it usually has a findable cause. Most persistent overheating traces back to an aged battery, a charging fault or liquid inside, and the right repair follows from the right diagnosis, not a guess.

A device that is hot AND swelling, smoking, or too hot to hold is a safety risk. Stop using it, do not charge it, and do not leave it on soft furnishings or unattended. Bring it in for safe handling.

What you might be seeing

Hot while charging, and draining fast

Warmth with rapid drain usually points to an aged battery rather than the charger.

Hot even when idle

Heat with the screen off and nothing running deserves a diagnostic. It can be battery, board or software load.

Hot around the charging port

Localised heat at the port can be a port or cable fault. Stop charging and have it checked.

Shuts down or dims from heat

The device protects itself by dimming or powering off. Repeated thermal shutdowns are not normal.

Hot after liquid exposure

Heat after a spill or soaking is a liquid-damage sign. Power it off and treat it as liquid damage.

Hot and the back or screen is lifting

Heat plus swelling is a battery safety risk. Stop using it and bring it in for safe handling.

Likely causes, and what to do

Do

  • Remove any thick case and let it cool naturally
  • Note WHEN it gets hot: charging, idle, or one app
  • Note whether the battery also drains fast or health is low
  • Back up your device while it is stable

Do not

  • Do not keep charging a device that is hot at the port or swelling
  • Do not put it in a fridge or freezer, condensation causes new damage
  • Do not leave a hot device on bedding, sofas or in a car
  • Do not press on a bulging back or screen

Usually fixable, once the cause is found

Persistent overheating usually has a physical cause we can repair: an aged battery, a faulty charging port, or corrosion from liquid. Sometimes it is software load rather than hardware, and we tell you that honestly instead of selling a repair. Because heat has several possible causes, a diagnostic confirms the right one first, and the fee is credited toward the repair if you proceed.

The repair that usually fixes it

Battery replacement

Heat with fast drain or low battery health usually means an aged battery. A new battery removes the strain.

Charging-port repair

Heat concentrated at the port while charging points to the port or cable rather than the battery.

Liquid damage treatment

Heat after a spill means corrosion may be active inside. That needs treatment, not observation.

Not sure? Start with a diagnostic

Heat has several possible causes. A diagnostic finds the real one, and the fee is credited if you proceed.

Common questions

Is it normal for my phone to get warm?

Some warmth while charging, gaming or using navigation is normal. Heat that comes with fast battery drain, heat when idle, or heat after liquid is not, and it is worth having the cause confirmed rather than living with it.

Will a new battery stop the overheating?

Often, when the cause is an aged battery working too hard, heat and fast drain go together. But heat can also come from a port fault, liquid corrosion or software load, so we confirm the cause with a diagnostic first rather than sell you a battery you might not need.

My phone is hot and the back is lifting. What do I do?

Stop using it, do not charge it, and do not press on it. Heat with swelling is a battery safety risk, and it needs safe handling and replacement. Bring it in rather than leaving it charging unattended.

Should I put a hot phone in the fridge?

No. Rapid cooling causes condensation inside the device, which creates a new liquid problem. Remove the case, let it cool naturally, and have the cause looked at if the heat keeps returning.
