Your Data During a Repair: Exactly What We Do and Don't Touch

· Written by ExpressTech

In short

ExpressTech's data safety standard — what happens to your personal data during a hardware repair, and the precautions worth taking.

Handing over a phone or laptop means handing over the most personal object you own. Here is exactly where ExpressTech stands on your data — the same standard for every customer.

The standard

We do not access your personal data during standard hardware repairs. Your data is never accessed, transferred or erased unless you explicitly ask us to carry out a data-related service.

A screen, battery or charging port replacement is hardware work: the technician needs the device to power on and respond, not your photographs, messages or accounts.

Before your repair

We recommend keeping a backup as a general precaution before any repair. It's your safety net for scenarios no repair shop can control — a device that arrives with existing board damage, or a fault that worsens regardless of intervention.

Testing without touching your data

Before a device leaves the bench, we test the repaired function and the key surrounding functions affected by the repair — display, touch, cameras, speakers, charging. That testing works at the hardware level and does not involve reading your personal content.

For businesses and schools

We do not access, transfer or erase customer data without explicit instruction. NDAs and data handling agreements are available on request — relevant for fleets, schools and any organisation with its own data policies.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to remove my passcode or sign out of my account?

For most hardware repairs we'll tell you exactly what's needed when you book or drop off — and it never involves us browsing your content.

Can you recover data from a damaged device?

Data recovery is a separate, explicitly requested service — assessed and quoted individually before any work. Recovery time depends on the data condition and method.

ExpressTech is Independent by Choice — an independent repair specialist, not affiliated with or authorised by any manufacturer.
